HOWARD H. RYE SOLO COMPETITION
INFORMATION
The competition is open to current members of the BNYS.
Applications are due by December 9, 2024.
Contestants are required to perform a movement(s) of a concerto or single composition for solo instrument and orchestra. Performance time should be between 5-10 minutes. Once an application is submitted, it will be verified that the work is available for purchase/rental before a competition time slot is approved.
Each contestant is responsible for bringing an accompanist with them for the competition. Memorization is not required, but encouraged.
Judging will be done by a panel of professional musicians/conductors/music educators. The judge’s rubric will include tone, intonation, style, articulation, dynamics, professionalism and cohesion with the accompanist. Using a decimal point scale, a winner will be determined based on the cumulative score.
The winner of the competition will perform their solo work, accompanied by the youth orchestra, at our Spring Concert. The winner will also receive a monetary award of $_____. A runner-up is determined, should someone play well enough, and would step into the solo spot should our winner be unable to perform. If this occurs, their solo work will be presented with piano. The runner-up will also receive a monetary award of $_____.
