HOWARD H. RYE SOLO COMPETITION

INFORMATION & APPLICATION

The Bloomington Normal Youth Symphony will again hold its Howard H. Rye Solo Competition this spring.

The competition is open to current members of the BNYS in their Junior or Senior year of high school. ALL APPLICATIONS ARE DUE ON OR BEFORE OUR FIRST SPRING REHEARSAL.

Contestants are required to perform a movement of a concerto or single composition for solo instrument and orchestra with a performance time between five and ten minutes. MAKE SURE THAT ORCHESTRA PARTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR SELECTION.

Each contestant is responsible for bringing an accompanist with them for the competition. The music need not be memorized, but the participant should know it well enough to play from memory if it were necessary.

Judging will be done by a panel of qualified musicians and chosen to include those proficient on instruments played by the contestants as much as possible. Judges are not finalized until all applications are received, which makes the DEADLINE very important.

The winner of the competition will perform with the BNYS at our Spring Concert and will receive a monetary award. A runner up is determined if someone plays well enough to step into the solo spot should our winner be unable to perform and will also receive a monetary award.

If you are interested in entering the competition, please complete and submit the application below.

We are proud of the high level of musicianship that so many of you share with us and look forward to further cheering you on in your musical successes.
